Peridot, Sardonyx & Spinel: August's Birthstones.

Peridot, Sardonyx & Spinel: August's Birthstones.

If you were born in August, you get three different birthstones: Peridot, Sardonyx and Spinel. Each one has its own look, history, and meaning, so there’s something for everyone.

Peridot

Peridot is a cheerful green stone, ranging from lime to olive in colour. People have loved it for thousands of years. It was even called the “gem of the sun” in ancient Egypt. It was believed to bring peace, protect against bad dreams, and today it’s often linked to positive energy and renewal.

Interesting Facts:

  • The ancient Egyptians mined Peridot on an island in the Red Sea over 3,500 years ago.
  • Some Peridot has come to Earth inside meteorites, making it one of the few gemstones found in space.

Sardonyx

Sardonyx is easy to recognise because of its bands of red-brown, black and white. It was popular in ancient Rome, often carved into rings and seals. People thought it gave courage, strength and protection. Even now, it’s seen as a stone that helps with stability and focus.

Interesting Facts:

  • Sardonyx amulets were worn by Roman soldiers for bravery and success in battle.
  • The layered look of Sardonyx made it perfect for cameos and carved portraits in ancient jewellery.

Spinel

Spinel comes in many colours (red, pink, blue and violet, to name just a few). For a long time, people used to mistake it for ruby or sapphire, and some famous “rubies” in royal crowns are actually Spinel. It’s said to bring energy and joy, making it a bright and uplifting choice for August birthdays.

Interesting Facts:

  • The “Black Prince’s Ruby” in the British Crown Jewels is actually a red Spinel.
  • Spinel is found in the same places as sapphires and rubies, which is why it was often confused with them.

A Trio of Gems to Choose From

Peridot, Sardonyx, and Spinel each have something special to offer. Peridot brings a fresh green glow, Sardonyx adds bold stripes and strength, and Spinel offers sparkle in many colours. August has a little bit of everything, making these birthstones fun to explore and wear.
